Echoes of Division
"Buffalo's waterfront became a battleground in 1863, as a mob targeted Black-owned businesses and homes, leaving devastation in its wake. Racial tension, long simmering beneath the surface, erupted into a violent tempest, exposing the raw nerves of a city divided. Many Blacks fled to Dug’s Dive. The mob concentrated its attention on the Dive and the New England Hotel, where many Blacks lived, but the police were able to rescue those inside. Many of the rescued had already been severely beaten. Twenty to thirty Blacks were brought to safety through back streets and placed in jail to protect them from the mob. In the end, several Blacks and police officers were injured with two Blacks dying because of the rioting. It was determined in a Buffalo court that James Stanton, an Irishman in his late teens, was the principal person who had killed William Smith on the Mary Stewart. He was sentenced to be hanged on February 9th, 1864.
