Tips on a Fighting Chance in the World I

This series highlights tips, advice, or quotes shared with my students who participate in my Emotional Intelligence classes or workshops.

Polonius’

"Give every thy ear, but few thy voice; Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement."

-Polonius'

Hamlet I, iii, 55-81

This famous quote of fatherly advice is spoken by Polonius to Laertes shortly before Laertes leaves for France, in Act I, scene iii. Polonius, who is bidding Laertes farewell, gives him this list of instructions about how to behave before he sends him on his way. One of Polonius's words of advice is being be a good listener; accept criticism but do not be judgmental.

Listening is an integral aspect of communication. It is only when you listen, that you can understand the intent of the other person is trying say. It involves understanding the situation and underlying circumstances and even gauging what a person is unable to say by noticing the body language. Effective listening skills can be cultivated and honed with consist practice and effort. Recently I encourage my students two improve their listening skills in two tangible steps. First minimize distractions while listening to the other person. Second, try not to interrupt the conversation even if you agree with the other person’s viewpoint.
